YMCA OF CATAWBA VALLEY OBSERVES WATER SAFETY MONTH

From oceans to lakes to streams to swimming pools, water is everywhere: 71% of the Earth’s surface is covered in it! While water can be an irresistible place for kids to explore, play and enjoy splashy fun, it can be risky for those who haven’t yet developed their water smarts. The YMCA of Catawba Valley values the importance of Water Safety Month and teaching kids and adults about water safety skills. The lessons are designed to teach water safety skills that help reduce the risk of drowning and building confidence in and around the water. With drowning as the leading cause of death for children between 1 to 4 years old and the second leading cause of unintentional injury or death for children 5 to 14 years old according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, teaching children how to be safe in and around the water is a necessity, not a luxury. Participants in swim lessons are taught:

● Exercises to help kids adjust to being in the water
● Instruction in two skill sets kids can use if they unexpectedly find themselves in
the water: Jump, Push, Turn, Grab and Swim, Float Swim.
● Safety topics like what to do if you see someone in the water who needs help
● Fun activities that reinforce skill

Public and private swim lessons are available at Hickory Foundation YMCA, Adrian L. Shuford Jr. YMCA, Sally’s YMCA, and Lincoln County Family YMCA beginning at 6 months old. Whether you are introducing your little one to the water for the first time or looking to enhance your own swimming abilities, the YMCA's certified swim instructors are dedicated to creating a supportive and encouraging environment for all participants.

Registration for the swim lessons are open, and interested individuals are encouraged to visit the YMCA of Catawba Valley website at ymcacv.org for more information on availability, schedules, and pricing.
